L-Glutamine is classified as a non-essential amino acid, but it is of crucial importance to every cell in the human body. It is utilised by every cell and every tissue, though some require more than others. Whether trying to build lean muscle mass, improve brain function, protect the stomach and intestine from non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, repair leaky gut or help balance blood glucose, L-glutamine is required in sufficient amounts to optimise tissue function and regulate these functions.

Glutamine serves as a nitrogen and carbon donor and is therefore an important muscle building amino acid. It helps replenish muscle glycogen after exercise and builds lean muscle mass. Without sufficient available glutamine, muscles begin to atrophy. L-glutamine is also a source of energy for nucleotide synthesis by all cells engaged in rapid division especially those of the intestinal lining cells and certain immune cells (thymocytes, lymphocytes and macrophages).

Heavy stress (strenuous training, exercise, rapid muscle growth, infectious disease, surgery, burns, injury or any acute trauma) may all lead to glutamine depletion and consequent immune dysfunction, intestinal problems and less than optimal muscle growth or muscle wasting.

Glutamine makes up more than 60% of the free amino acids in the body. Without sufficient available glutamine the muscles, the intestines and other tissues may begin to atrophy (become delicate, thin and wear away) and the immune system may no longer function optimally.

L-Glutamine also plays a vital role in maintaining blood glucose and pH by interacting with the kidneys. It helps control the volume of water in a cell, plays a vital role in the control and balance of blood sugars, helps regulate the biosynthesis of RNA and DNA, and it is vital for cardiovascular function.

Usage:

Trauma, burns, infections and prolonged exercise can deplete the body’s glutamine stores. The more stress applied by high volume, high intensity training, the more depleted you glutamine stores become. When calories are restricted due to diet, the body may not manufacture sufficient amounts of glutamine as quickly as it is required. Ideal for body builders to add to creatine or a protein powder. Endurance athletes can mix Pharmasports L-Glutamine with a carbohydrate based drink before and after hard training or on race day.
