Porridge

A piping hot bowl of porridge … it’s the perfect way to start your day. It’s filling and it’s satisfying but did you know that porridge is also rich in fibre, can help regulate cholesterol levels and can provide you with enough energy to carry you through a hectic morning schedule.




Here are two quick and easy ways to whip up a bowl of porridge for breakfast.


Ingredients

Approximately ½ cup oats per person

1 cup low fat milk or water per person

Directions

Stove top: Mix ingredients together in a pot, then bring to the boil on a medium heat. Stir constantly while cooking for approximately 3 minutes.

Microwave: Mix ingredients together in a microwaveable bowl. Cook on high for approximately 1 minute. Mix then microwave for another minute.

TIPS


Why not pump some new life into an old favourite by trying some of these tasty and nutritious variations:

  • Top with a little low fat milk and some tinned fruit
  • Mix in a scoop of whey powder for a healthy boost of protein
  • Top with sliced banana and a few sultanas
  • Mix in half a cup of your favourite berries and sprinkle a little coconut on the top
  • Add ¼ cup of grated or stewed apple with a ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon
