What is DHA and why is it good for children? Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fat which is essential for the growth and functional development of the brain in infants and children, and the proper functioning of our brains as adults. It is also involved in the development of the nervous system and eyes. The brain and the eye contain the greatest concentrations of DHA in the body.A diet rich in DHA has been shown to enhance concentration, memory and learning ability in children, whereas deficiencies of DHA have been associated with learning deficits. A high concentration of DHA can be found in mother's breast milk, and is the major source of DHA for infants during breastfeeding. A breastfeeding mother can only supply a baby with what she has available in her own body stores, so consequently it is important for her to ensure that she is consuming adequate DHA in her diet, or is supplementing with a suitable source. Once a child is weaned and is no longer receiving DHA from breast milk, it is important to ensure that the child is obtaining DHA from other dietary sources. The best dietary sources of DHA include: seafood (especially oily fish), organ meats, and omega-enriched eggs. Children who do not regularly include these foods in their diet, may benefit from taking an omega-3 supplement to ensure an adequate DHA supply.
