Real Nutrition Coaching Works
Testimonial

I could not believe how good it felt. Before then, I had been eating at near starvation levels, according to Jacqui. There had been too much carbohydrate, too few vegetables, very little protein and not enough quality snacks to keep my metabolism fired into action. Yet food is just part of the picture. At each fortnightly consultation, Jacqui writes down my achievements and strengths. We set new goals that might simply be getting more sleep or remembering to pack a protein bar if I'm out with the kids late in the day. This week I will celebrate my 50th birthday and I'm at a place in my life that I never dared to dream of a year ago. I'm happy with the way I look and I feel okay about saying that.

Are You a Carbohydrate Junkie?

Too Good to Resist?

If you find foods such as biscuits, sweets and muffins too good to resist, don’t just blame it on your will-power. There could be some interesting brain chemistry going on and trying to eliminate carbohydrates from your diet will make your cravings worse.

We've all experienced the soothing effects of a sugar-hit at some stage in our lives. In small amounts sugar makes us feel good, it gives us an immediate burst of energy that increases our feel good hormone serotonin. Like a little happy pill sweet treats pick us up when we are feeling tired, depressed or anxious. In my experience women are at higher risk of sugar addiction than men due to the menstrual fluctuation of our hormones and the hectic pace of our lives.

An interesting study was published in ‘The Journal of Obesity Research’ in 2002. A team of scientists concluded that intermittent, excessive sugar intake created a sugar dependency that was followed by withdrawal symptoms. The brain activity they studied clearly proved that withdrawal from sugar can trigger the same symptoms as withdrawal from drugs such as morphine and nicotine. Further studies will enable us to understand food disorders such as Bulimia, where sufferers usually deprive themselves for long periods of time, only to self medicate with a binge later on.

When a sugar addiction gets out of hand it can create a lot of unhappiness. It’s hard to hide from a food problem when it looks back at you in the mirror everyday. Society tends to treat drug addicts with more empathy. Dealing with a food addiction can be harder than giving up narcotics. You can’t just go cold turkey with food because you still need to eat.

If you indulge in the occasional sweet rest assured this is healthy. If carbohydrate cravings are taking over your life and you feel out of control read through the following tips and try to implicate them one by one into your life.

HOW TO TAKE CONTROL

  1. The first step to overcoming a carbohydrate craving is to eat a balanced diet, rich in complex carbohydrates like brown rice, whole grains, kumara, oats and fruit.
  2. Try to ensure most meals contain a decent amount of protein or low fat dairy foods. Protein helps keep you more satisfied in between meals and reduces cravings.
  3. Don’t skip meals. You will be more likely to binge if you have missed breakfast or worked through your lunch break.
  4. Many women have been on the low fat bandwagon for too long. We need good fats in our diet to help us regulate hormones and metabolism. Omega 3 in particular helps with weight loss and depression.
  5. Chromium helps to stabilise blood sugar levels and improve the cells’ sensitivity to insulin. Chromium is used extensively as a weight loss supplement as it helps to manage sugar cravings. Take chromium in the morning with breakfast, then again in the afternoon when you normally experience cravings. If you have diabetes check with your physician first.
  6. Artificial sweeteners aren’t all bad news. They are really useful tool when used as a replacement for sugar during the transition between a high sugar diet and a low sugar diet.
  7. Don’t try to go on a crash diet or make too many changes at once. A diet that is too low in energy will activate your starvation hormones which will lead to over eating.
  8. Exercise can be more effective than mood-boosting drugs such as Prozac. Getting a sweat up everyday helps will help you experience the same feel good effect that sugar produces.
  9. Recognise your trigger foods and don’t keep them in the house.
  10. Change your routine, if you always buy chocolate at work try leaving your wallet at home and packing a lunch instead.
  11. You don’t have to go it alone, a Dietician or Counselor can offer much needed support to help overcome food additions. Finding someone you trust can make it much easier to develop a healthier relationship with food.

Life Changing
I now see my nutritionist every Wednesday and she is one of the most important people in my life. She teaches me and mentors me on my long journey to losing 40 kilos of fat. She makes me feel very comfortable, like I am part of the Real Nutrition family. She fine tunes my healthy eating plan every week and tops up my nutritional supplements. She supported me to move to another gym and get a personal trainer to undergo regular resistance training and cardio sessions. To date I have lost 14 kilos of fat. I feel so healthy, strong and in control.I haven't been sick for months, and my doctor wants to take me off my blood pressure and cholesterol medication at my next 3 monthly visit.
