Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Any woman can develop polycystic ovaries, certain women do appear to have a higher risk of developing the syndrome. Risk factors include:

• having a family history of PCOS (especially mother or sister)
• having diabetes or insulin resistance
• being overweight or obese
• being between the ages of 20 and 30

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Symptoms

Many women with PCOS never experience any symptoms associated with the syndrome. Others experience a wide variety of uncomfortable PCOS symptoms, which may include:

  • irregular menstruation
  • loss of menstruation (amenorrhea)
  • difficulty getting pregnant
  • weight gain, particularly around the waist line
  • hirsutism, which causes excessive hair growth, especially on the face and body
  • acne and oily skin
  • decreased breast size

Treatment of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

There is currently no cure for PCOS but as insulin resistance is normally a feature of this condition, taking the following steps to lower insulin levels may be helpful.

  • Reduction of excess fat
  • Regular exercise will help use up blood sugar and lower insulin – preferably daily    exercise as the effect only lasts 24 hours.
  • Supplementation with chromium, Vitamin B complex, and a high strength multivitamin.
  • Essential fatty acids such as fish oil can help increase insulin sensitivity.
  • Increase dietary fibre to slow blood sugar response
  • Consume high quality, lean proteins with every meal (stimulates the metabolic enhancing hormone, glucagon which works in opposition to insulin)

Other recommendations:

  • Eliminate/reduce caffeine including coffee, black tea, diet coke and chocolate
  • Avoid refined and processed foods
  • Reduce alcohol, dairy, and simple sugars (including fruit)
  • Eliminate high sugar drinks and fruit juices
  • Follow a low carbohydrate, low GI diet
  • Avoid cigarette smoking (increases the risk of atherosclerosis and it also aggravates insulin resistance in Type 2 diabetes)

Life Changing
I now see my nutritionist every Wednesday and she is one of the most important people in my life. She teaches me and mentors me on my long journey to losing 40 kilos of fat. She makes me feel very comfortable, like I am part of the Real Nutrition family. She fine tunes my healthy eating plan every week and tops up my nutritional supplements. She supported me to move to another gym and get a personal trainer to undergo regular resistance training and cardio sessions. To date I have lost 14 kilos of fat. I feel so healthy, strong and in control.I haven't been sick for months, and my doctor wants to take me off my blood pressure and cholesterol medication at my next 3 monthly visit.
