Exclusive Interview With
Nickiwana Perese
Today we interviewed one of NZ’s top
natural athletes.
Hi Nick, you are in great shape, tell us, how did you get there and how much training do you have to do?
"Hi I’d say it starts with a vision of what you have for yourself and a belief that you can accomplish it".
"Being around people that are like minded in achieving similar goals or being around people that have achieved their goals is important and then really committing yourself that you will do anything to achieve your goals. What I did was set small goals for myself, the first time I went back to the gym I just sat around watching everyone for two weeks and done nothing but watched and soaked up the atmosphere until I really wanted to be there".
"Before you can train your body you have to prepare and train your mind into new habits I didn’t want to be like the rabbit that burns out I wanted to improve myself overtime and had a persistent tortoise approach slow and steady. The next step for me after I was able to train more consistently was to aim to do a local gym challenge, which helped give me a new level of improvement. Later after tackling this I was confident enough to team up with real nutrition and get serious.
Right now I find that 3-4 days a week of hard training for 45-60 minutes helps me to grow'.
You must spend hours in the gym, what’s a typical week?
"A perfect week for me right now would be Monday Tuesday, Thursday Friday - train weights. Wednesday and Saturday some form of cardio to keep a base fitness level until I step it up closer to competition. So 5-6 quality hours a week works good for me".
You have incredible muscle, what’s the key to your success?
"Thank you eat everything you can! lol…. actually two things; effective eating and effective training. I’m fortunate I have Jacquie and Tim Dale of real nutrition monitor how much food I need, also the types of food makes a difference and the times that you eat your meals can affect weather your body will use it too build muscle or store as fat. With training Ive had Awesome training partners and have found that for myself heavy weight with strict technique increases the intensity and causes muscle to grow as long as you get in some adequate rest also".
There are so many different supplements for sale, do they all work?
Which supplements do you recommend?
"For the average person wanting to look after themselves and doing a bit of training, having a
good low calorie protein powder and
Real Nutrients Multivitamin in conjunction with a good eating plan. For me
L Glutamine,
Omega 3,
Vitamin C, Creatine seems to work well and I have tried
ZMA in the past which seemed to have been good for my strength"
You both get so lean and ripped? What’s the key?
"I have the best Nutritionist"
Bodybuilding is a sport that is rife with drugs and steroids, what’s your take on drugs in sport?
"Its not for me, Drugs are part of the sport and you need your freaks to attract the big crowds, I cant change this, but I can change myself I started bodybuilding as a way to improve myself and my health, steroids is not going to help me achieve that. I understand and share the same never say die attitude that these enhanced athletes have and take my hat off to them because they still have to get their butts in the gym and go to war, even more so then most. They have committed themselves to achieving what they want and I am committed to achieving what I want this might mean that I don’t always win first prize but I’ll fight tooth and nail to get it with in the confines of my own natural genetics I definitely feel like a winner once I’m up on stage".
We’d love to hear about your future goals, are you training for any shows this year?
"Yes I am competing this year in two IFBB shows possibly three, and will work closely with Jacquie and Tim to help us present our best. I’d love to compete at the Natural Olympia competition which is the ultimate achievement for any natural Bodybuilder but am in no rush as Family priorities come first. So in the mean time I’ll just continue to pay my dues and enjoy life". Thank you very much
