Exclusive Interview With Top Natural Bodybuilder Tarren McCall

Tarren profile.JPG

NZ and World Champion Athlete

Today we interviewed Tarren McCall.

Hi Tarren, you must spend hours in the gym, what’s a typical week?

I do 4-5 weight sessions a week lasting aprox 45 mins each usually 2 body parts per session. I do cardio from home i.e., walking for 45 mins to 1 hour, or use my cardio equipment [cross-trainer, rower or bike]. Depending on how much body fat I am or how close to a comp I will up it to 2 x a day, otherwise once a day..

You have incredible muscle, what’s the key to your success?

Discipline, organisation, the drive to succeed and of course 80% diet, for which I see a nutritionist, Jacquie Dale from Real Nutrition.

There are so many different supplements for sale, do they all work?

I think if they sound too good to be true, then they probably don’t. It is also up to the individual, some supplements work for some people and some don’t .I guess it's all trial and error. Listed below are the ones I use.

Real Nutrients Softgel Multi
Real Nutrients Omega
Rhodiola
Pharmasport Whey
Universal L Carnitine
Real Nutrients Vit C

Which supplements do you recommend?

Well I have tried a few over the years, the ones that I take regularly are L Carnitine [before cardio] Omega 3, Multi & Mineral, Vitamin C, Glutamine, Radiola [if I am feeling stressed or run down] ZMA [before bed] and of course a good quality protein powder, I use Pharmasport whey Powder.

Also coming up to a competition I sometimes use a fat burner for energy.

You get so lean and ripped, what’s the key?

Too get really lean and ripped the key is to get your body fat low but stay hard at the same time,so the diet is 80% of the result,  making sure you are eating enough carbs and enough protein every 3-4 hours, especially after training. Seeing my nutritionist weekly and having my body fat and muscle measured ensures I am on target. Also I find the cardio helps me to stay hard.

Bodybuilding is a sport that is rife with drugs and steroids, what’s your take on drugs in sport?

Steroids are definitely an advantage in helping too get bigger quicker, but no advantage health wise. Also they are not magic you still have to put in the hard training and cardio sessions. To win a competition you still have to have good symmetry not just big muscles. As a natural athlete, I have reached my full natural potential as far as muscle size goes, however I focus on my condition and getting as lean and hard as possible, this gives the illusion that I have more muscle than I have.

We’d love to hear about your future goals, are you training for any shows this year?

Currently I am training and preparing for the Nabba Worlds in Greece on the 14th June, and I have just done the NZ qualifier in which I won the overall physique title.

Life Changing
I now see my nutritionist every Wednesday and she is one of the most important people in my life. She teaches me and mentors me on my long journey to losing 40 kilos of fat. She makes me feel very comfortable, like I am part of the Real Nutrition family. She fine tunes my healthy eating plan every week and tops up my nutritional supplements. She supported me to move to another gym and get a personal trainer to undergo regular resistance training and cardio sessions. To date I have lost 14 kilos of fat. I feel so healthy, strong and in control.I haven't been sick for months, and my doctor wants to take me off my blood pressure and cholesterol medication at my next 3 monthly visit.
